The knowledge of Tawhid, the best knowledge to attain, has this high rank because it has to do with knowing about Allah and His Messengers. This entails knowing what befits Allah and what is impossible to be among His attributes, and what befits the Prophets and Messengers and what is impossible to be among their attributes.

Let it be known, Allah, the Creator and only God, is attributed with attributes of perfection that do not resemble the attributes of the creations. Allah sent Prophets and Messengers to invite people to Islam, to worship the only God and believe in the Messenger sent to them in their respective time. The Prophets and Messengers are all attributed with the best attributes a human could be attributed with.

In our next blogs we will be explaining the attributes of the Prophets and Messengers in detail and we will mention what is impossible to be among their attributes. Before discussing their attributes, we will be explaining the thirteen attributes of Allah that every accountable Muslim must know, even if the person didn't memorize them, one should at least know and believe their meaning.

Allah, the Creator, is attributed with Existence, an attribute any person with a sound intellect and has the capacity to reason and discern can prove.

Have you ever wondered how we know Allah exists, even before reading the Qur’an?

Allah is not to be compared to the creations, so when we mention the attributes of Allah even if there is a verbal agreement with an attribute of a creation the meaning is different from the attribute of the creation. An example of that would be, a living human being is attributed with existence, but his existence is originated by a creator dissimilar to him. Allah specified that human with existence, but no one specifies Allah with Existence, Allah's Existence is an intellectual necessity, meaning the sound intellect does not accept the non-existance of Allah.

The Proofs of Allah’s Existence:
  1. The intellectual proof of Allah's Existence:

Any person with a sound intellect if he or she sees a building, they directly know there is a builder. When one sees a painting, one knows there is a painter. So if the person sees this whole world with all its details, he or she will know that this world has a creator that does not resemble the creations in any way.

Before creating this world Allah existed, and after creating this world Allah exists without residing in it.

  2. The textual proof of Allah's Existence:

It is mentioned in the Qur'an: ﴾ أَفِي اللهِ شَكٌّ ﴿ [Surat Ibrahim: 10], the verse means: "There is no doubt in Allah's Existence".

It was also mentioned in the Hadith of the Prophet, the Prophet ﷺ said: «كان الله ولم يكن شىءٌ غيره», the Hadith means: "Allah Existed eternally (without a beginning) and nothing else existed".

  3. Story of Abu Hanifa vs. the atheist:

There was once a man who denied the existence of Allah who went to one of the caliphs (Muslim Leader). The man said: "The scholars in your era claim that this universe has a creator, and I am ready to prove to them that there isn’t a creator."

The Caliph sent after for one of the great scholars who happened to be Abu Hanifa who intended to be a bit late for their meeting. When he arrived, the Caliph had Abu Hanifa sit in the middle of the room which was filled with scholars and other people. The man then asked Abu Hanifa: ”Why were you late to come?” Abu Hanifa said: ”What if I told you that something weird happened to me on my way here, which had me late? What if I told you that my house is behind Degla river and just when I wanted to cross over, I only found an old boat which its wooden board was broken, and just when I laid my eyes on it, the wooden boards began to gather together until the boat was safe to ride again without the need of a carpenter, then I was able to sail across the river and make my way here, would you believe me?”.

The man said: "Everyone, listen to what your scholar is saying! This is not believable! How would a boat come together without a carpenter? This is just a mere lie.”

Abu Hanifa then said,” You non-believer, if your mind couldn’t comprehend the building of a boat without a carpenter or a builder, then how do you claim that the whole universe doesn’t have a creator?!”

Just then, the man remained silent with nothing to reply with, then he was punished by the Caliph for his wrong belief.

As you can see, the Muslim scholars used and still use intellectual proofs to refute the misguided.

This blog is just the beginning. In the next one, we’ll explore the more of the 13 attributes of Allah that every Muslim must know..
